Despite the numerous ways in which risk and need assessment tools can improve correctional policy and practice, many of the tools currently used across much of the country are outdated, inefficient, and less effective than they should be.

These guidelines, assembled by corrections researchers and practitioners, include an innovative, practical checklist of steps practitioners can use to maximize the reliability and validity of risk and need instruments.
