The Performance-based Standards (PbS) Learning Institute recently released three Data Snapshots summarizing the impact of COVID-19 in juvenile justice facilities.
The snapshots highlight information collected in April 2021 about COVID-19 positivity test rates, prevention practices, and average daily population. Data were reported voluntarily by 148 correction, detention, assessment, and community-based residential programs in 32 states.
The data snapshots are:
- Responding to the Pandemic: Testing Practices. Data show a positive COVID-19 test rate of 4 percent among youth and a less than 2-percent positive test rate among staff.
- Responding to the Pandemic: Prevention and Protection Strategies. More than
90 percent of PbS participating youth facilities reported implementing recommended pandemic responses. - Responding to the Pandemic: Fewer Youths In Custody. Data show the average daily population in detention centers and correction facilities declined slightly and remained below the pre-pandemic numbers.
