New AIC research reveals that:
- A systematic review of studies from the period 2000-2018 identified only eight studies that looked at the impact of criminal justice responses on child sexual abuse material (CSAM) using rigorous methods.
- There is some evidence that providing police with training on CSAM can have a positive impact on their knowledge of national and international legislation, and a variable impact on arrest and investigative practices.
- The lack of rigorous evaluation research limits the ability to understand ‘what works’ in addressing CSAM offending.
